Pentominoes Investigation in Year 5EH/CD!

22nd Jun 2026

Mr Hayter’s Year 5 class had great fun taking part in a pentominoes investigation.

Pentominoes are a type of polyomino—a shape made by joining squares edge to edge. The challenge for the pupils was to work out how many different pentominoes could be created.

The children used excellent thinking, reasoning and problem-solving skills as they worked systematically to discover there are 12 pentominoes.

They were highly engaged throughout the investigation and clearly enjoyed the challenge, as can be seen in the photographs.

Once the class had established that there were 12 unique pentominoes, they extended their learning by investigating the lines of symmetry of each shape, developing their mathematical understanding even further.

The task required careful logical thinking and perseverance, and it was wonderful to see the children applying their mathematical reasoning to this activity.
